But shadowboxing with weights, fast enough to train explosiveness? That does not sound healthy.

I also think the genetic thing is not important for you, because that's true for everything. Not everybody could like be Lance Armstrong or Albert Einstein. Nevertheless you work on your endurance and go to school, right?

yea well in the fight (or in any sport actually) speed is always a huge leg up, the proof is in the pudding

except synchronized swimming... =/ .lol

i used to to like 90-120 clapping pushups a day in set of 30... i must have had some explosiveness back then but that was before i knew about mma, and now my body is fucked from other things.... how long would my shoulders retain explosive power?? because i feel like arm punches can still KO ppl a few years later?

MMA to me is about winning when you are not the best technical striker or highest level black belt. It is about winning when you are the better fighter.

Couple things that should be tried here, first is to take lightweights, like 3lbs, and hold them in each hand for punches, shadow box, 3 rounds of 3 mins. When you do pushups, do them fast, this will build handspeed as well. Make sure your arm is not overly bulky, that it is lighter in weight so that those punches can fly.

Here's some physiology for you: The speed of which you extract your muscle does not change from a standard (70kg) person to a massive bodybuilder. This is because the amount and lenght of muscle fibers does not change through life, only the size of them. Ergo, it is not possible to actually increase the speed at which you throw your punches by working the strenght of your arms/chest. However, I think it depends on the so-called muscle memory and your reflexes, which training does help because you force your body to do that same illusionary punch (or real punch if you're sparring). Thereby allowing your brain to know how to react and therefore sends the action potentials to your muscles more quickly. My point is, you can punch just as fast as any boxer in the world, they are just a lot better at it than you are.
