Judo -> MMA

Postby Lassedh » 8. Feb 2010, 22:53

I've been wondering what the ups and downs are of training Judo in terms of applying it in MMA, apart from throws which is obvious. What do you guys think?

There is wrestling judo, also called catch wrestling, kinda judo plus wrestling, much like bjj. I would recommend that one bfore swtiching to mma, rather than orthodox judo.

I feel this would be better route to take. I think this is the best mix of grappling you can get. just my 2 cents

jiu jitsu and wrestling. judo is great stuff, but how often do you see judokas fucking nailing judo throws in mma? it happens but not as much becuase you contending with guys who are from the singles and doubles school of fighting. imo blue belt jitsu then judo.

Judo is great because the emphasis is on position over submission. It can help you develop great ground positioning. IMO, it is best to pic 2 or 3 throws and learn them with GI, and from a clinch position. The hip throw is great from an over under, or headlock grip. I'm not a MMA fighter, but I have been able to use that before in my line of work. Teh outside leg hook, and shoulder throw are also good ones to learn.
Problem with judo in mma is that its not as big in the US as Asia and Europe , and there is a stigma attached to leaving top level judo to do paid work ( MMA Wrestling, etc ) , so no one has put a lot of time into developing grips.

blah blah blah...whereas jujitsu helps with wrestling altogether, judo can help you take someone down good as heck, but to stay on them, to finish off a fight by submission or to transition to a style where ground and pound is applicable, judo may not be the best one to get at, while jujitsu is.. :idea:

I noticed a lot, being a wrestler, rolling with judokas and BJJ prac's when they are wearing a Gi that they fuck me up, because I'm not used to gi's... However they're too used to being able to grab a gi to defend against a submission or get to a better position using their own and their opponent's gi's, I reckon thats a downfall. Especially when they come to MMA, they're to used to having the gi there, so when they have nothing to hold onto, they get fucked up. I notice most of the takedowns Judokas do use the gi, and most defence against submissions are used with the gi in BJJ, so just looking from a non-gi wearing perspective, it's a bit of a downside. (I'm not biased, I train Wrestling and BJJ, my cousin is NZ national Judo champ for womans open (and she's 17).

my 2 cents.
