Is it possible?

Postby Strieth » 17. Jan 2010, 13:29

Is it possible to self-train yourself in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu without the use of a friend or grappling dummy? Thanks.

You can train strength, endurance, speed and I'm sure there are some drills you can do alone. However, no matter the style, you can't train fighting alone. (OK, maybe you can train boxing alone, when you have a imaginary friend who is a boxer too...)

Well, what I was hoping to train was the movements and weight distributions.

If you live in Texas, you can do Rodeo to improve your mount.

Nah, I just train boxing at the moment. My groundgame came pretty natural for me, but i'm hoping to take up BJJ. Unfortiently, there are no classes here.

What do you mean? Have you ever tested yourself against a real grappler?

When you have no BJJ/Grappling around, then look for Judo, Wrestling, Sambo, ...
In Judo and Wrestling you usually get quality-training for little money.

absolutely not. you have to have a training partner. bottom line. if you start practicing something wrong and there is no one to tell you it doesnt feel right or you dont ghet proper resistance your shitting into the wind because your going to make the wrong technique muscle memory and then when you actually start rolling youll be fucked! also there is a huge difference between learning technique and practicing it. before i started could tell you all about what i was seeing because id learned it but in actual rolls id be fucked because id never done it on an actual person.

I think my grappling is pretty decent although I did start Judo when I was 4 and did it for 12 years

But then, why is your ground game "pretty natural"?

It wasnt me that said my ground game was pretty natural it was Strieth, I was just commenting on the fact that after 12 years I still wouldnt class my grappling as good.
