Exercises and routines to improve striking?

Postby Aggression » 20. Jan 2010, 08:17

hi guys, as I worked on my striking I was wondering good ways to improve it besides normal techniques, footwork timing etc. What are some good exercises to make punches land harder. are there certain ways or muscles that can be worked to make striking better?

I know weight lifting can actually be detrimental to striking if the wrong areas of the body are worked, but what ares can help improve striking power?

Pyramid drills work pretty well Iv found. You can do this with any kind of punch but what you do is throw 1 jab then 2 then 3 then 4 until you get to 10 then you work your way down to 9 then 8 then 7 till you get to 1 again... It will work your arms pretty good just make sure you keep your hands up and your chin down and try to get pull extension on your punches.

What I find to work better is to throw one jab, drop to the ground much like an AFL drill, throw two jabs, drop, three jabs, drop, etc. That way, you'll be working a tiny little bit of your groundgame aswell.

Yes you can add sprawls but depending on your shape you probably shouldnt start off doing that cause you might not make it very far in...

loads of drills out there but the thing to remember, your body will only throw out what it can pull back... if it didn't, there would be 'a lot' of hyper extension injuries and dislocated shoulders so train your opposite muscle groups as hard as the ones that throw your arms or legs out.

Do you guys know of any certain muscles to work that can help improve striking?

work only technique with out alot of power at the start of the workout when you're workin pads or mitts and at the end og the workout give it some shit for power.

Basically its just repetition, squats and pull ups can help so can plyometrics, but the key is repetition and technique.

Work your lats if you want power. Trust me on this. Hips and the position of your feet also play a key role in this, the majority of your power doesn't even come from your arm.

If you really want to improve your striking I would recommend that you buy some wrist/ankle weights and practice with those on, when you take them off your striking will feel a lot crisper and faster and stronger, use them on a regular basis and your striking will benefit from it a lot.

work deadlifts to streghten glutes and hamstrings which will improve power base.
then use explosive excercise to improve speed at which u can apply the strength like medcine ball throws etc!!

i think everything starts with the legs. so jump roping so you become light on your feet. i've been doing that a lot and i've been way lighter now.

If you want to be a power puncher, do benchpresses (strictly speaking muscles here, not technique - Listen to poo for that). If you want to be a great tactician, learn to punch with your whole body, starting from the position of the soles of your feet, twisting your whole body, and you'll be punching like Mousasi one day.
