Roy nelson sat on kimbo and tapped on he's head , they wernt punches and there was no danger of any damage from them but the rules are rules and a tap or thumping gut wrentching thud it is all still a counted strike . So shogun out strikeing work alone should of put the fight he's way

I was one of the only people I knew that thought Shogun stood a chance in this one. Almost put some money down the night of the fight until I saw that Shogun's odds went from +600 to +350. So glad I didn't now. I would have been sooo pissed. I wonder how many people bet on Shogun when the betting lines were so off? Anyone in this forum bet on Shogun? I wonder who will be favored in the rematch?

Man I have been reading this forum for a while and have had an account so I have to chip in on this. I seriously cannot believe how much people are bitching about this fight. I don't know if its just emotions or what, but people are getting way to worked up and personal about this fight. When it comes down to it, yes, Shogun devised an effective strategy that neutralized much of Machida's offensive plan, and yes those leg strikes were very painful and yes they hurt Machida's mobility, but what else did he do besides that? Shogun failed at every single takedown, and at the very most he rocked Machida once with punches, and even then that was in the heat of an exchange that Lyoto also traded in. This was by no means a completely dominant one sided fight.
Also to anyone wondering why they want to have Machida as a champion, well he completely knocked two of the top fighters in the entire light heavyweight division in Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans.
Now don't get me wrong, I think that having this fight being a UD victory for Machida is bullshit, Shogun probably should have won, it really could have gone either way depending on how you score it, but Shogun deserves the win in more ways than not. I like watching mma a lot, but I find it disturbing that such a large percentage of the posters on this forum lack the restraint required to keep conversations professional and civil. This was a close fight that deserves to be looked at in many different ways, there is no single right answer for what should have happened.

I spent all month trying to explain to my co-workers, most of whom are casual MMA fans- mainly UFC influenced, why exactly Shogun would win this fight. I'm a Shogun fan and I know the history behind his lackluster UFC fights. I also knew Machida before the UFC made him their marketing tool. I saw the Machida/BJ Penn fight and I knew that if BJ had been bigger he would have won. I spent all month explaing the styles between these two fighter and I even bet money on Shogun. During the fight, I was the only one in my company that cheered when shogun came out. Everyone else cheered for the champ. After the second rd, I leaned in to my girlfriends and whispered, watch everybody start jumping on Shogun's nuts now. Sure enough, every body and leg kick he landed was applauded and cheered for. I did not mind for I am a Shogun fan and i stick by my fighters regardless of the favorite to win. Seeing the great Machida backpeddling and not engaging was as I expected. The karate style Machida uses is open to counters and we all saw that exposed. If it had been Lyoto who did all the leg kicks and it was Shogun was walking around with a limp and had to be carried then everybody would say that Shogun got beat up and the Machida bandwagon would still be going on. What strategy is gonna be effective against a fighter who refuses to engage? How can you knock him out if he backpeddles? How much more aggressive did Shogun have to be?? Is he expected to literally chase Machida all over until he gets countered and everybody say, Machida's style is the best. BS. Shogun rolled with the knees that Lyoto threw at him, they were Muy Thai knees which is exactly what Shogun does, Muy Thai. He knows how to roll with the knees much like boxers roll with punches. The knees were even less than the leg kicks Machida fans claim did nothing to machida. On all the posts before the fight, who was honestly giving Shogun a chance in the dark? nobody. He stuck it to Machida and the "Great Puzzle" was solved. If anything, in the rematch- Shogun will KO machida. Then all you bandwagon riders will be claiming machida was overrated. Mark my words....

And everybody was saying before the fight, Machida is the least most hit person and has never lost a round. He's Liddell's predecessor, the machida era begins!! LMAO!!!

I think, Shogun won on points. He had Machida's legs damaged, also side. He neutralized Machida's attacks and most counters. He countered the counterer.

But, Shogun lost bc he did not beat Machida in overt convincing fashion--champ privilege won the fight for Machida (as well as UFC bullshit to keep now popular fighter in spotlight plus create controversey) Every fighter knows this is risk when fighting champ. Rua should have pushed it in last round. Meanwhile, the judges should have had some class and at least make it to look good--split decision. Unanimous? LOL. No. I do not think so.

In reality to any good eye for fighting (IMO) it was either draw or Shogun on points. Machida did not do shit to Shogun. Rua did damage to body, legs...and even in face you can see the difference between Rua and Machida in the end.

My assessment: After making legs and body weaker, Rua should have taken Machida down around 1:00 of last round, (double leg take-down on hurt legs, or single leg TD w/ sweep, etc) and stayed on top pounding away. This would have made the fight go to Rua.

I just watched it, and i have to completely agree with the judges. Machida won the first 3 rounds, not by alot but he did. the UFC has no power over the Judges. Those judges are extremely experienced and have watched alot more fights than any person in this forum.

i though the turtleing he did with kicks when machida would "spring" was smart but wasn't enough. He wasnt as aggressive as Machida, he wasn't trying to end the fight, his take down attempts were stuffed. His kicks were useless in the first 3 rounds. If his strategy was to weaken his legs and put pressure at the later rounds and end the fight, then why did he not do that? His corner was stupid for thinking he had won the fight, he clearly wasn't, they were listening to joe rogan.

How could you say he lost every round, at one point in round two Shogun was pushed back by strikes against the cage with his arms WIDE open and a dazed look on his face.

Straight from Cecil Peoples mouth "You have to keep in mind we always favor the fighter who is trying to finish the fight, and leg kicks certainly don't do that."

Another thing i agree with Cecil Peoples as a wrestler myself, I agree that Lyoto deserves points for reversals of his takedown attempts.

And never once did i hear mr. Joe Rogan praise Machida on such a dominant take down defense, like he always does for Chuck.

Think what you want based on strikeing stats and what joe rogan screams, but the fact is he won the first 3 rounds. Hands down, and the Judges saw it. Case closed.

Oh yeah and the booing was completely lame, drunken morons worked up by Rogan's screaming.

I was watching Machida v Shogun at the casino with my buddy while we sat at the 1-2 NL table. We had a 20$ bet and I gave him 2-1 on Shogun. He's a bad loser and he admitted that Machida clearly defended the title. I think watching it without sound and commentary makes a difference in how you'd score it. The reality is Machida made Shogun miss more and defended every take down attempt impeccably. If you don't call that Octagon control than I don't know what is. I know this won't be a popular post, and I have to admit that Shogun put on a great show, imho it was the most technical striking match I've ever watched in a ufc event. Right away I knew a rematch was in order, and I was pumped for it. The real winner here are true MMA fans, they got to see a supreme display of world class striking and they get to look forward to seeing it again quite soon. Not a bad decision, first three rounds to Machida.
