Tim Bissell: It’s 2016 and Dan Henderson will be a UFC champion. This is such a bizarre statement that it has to come true. We forget sometimes that MMA is not just a little crazy, it’s flat out bonkers. So often I’m caught thinking an outcome is obvious (Barao vs. Dillashaw, Rousey vs. Holm, Pettis vs. Dos Anjos, Rockhold vs. Bisping) because it feels like it should be (and because I’m the worst prognosticator here) only to see the reverse happen. Former middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko’s Bellator homecoming was a victorious one. After forcing to fight overseas due to a failed drug test and lengthy fight with the California State Athletic Commission, Shlemenko (54-9 MMA, 12-3 BMMA) was in fine form during a hard-fought TKO win over vet Kendall Grove (23-16 MMA, 4-3 BMMA). The bout headlined today’s Bellator 162 event, which took place at FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn. The main card aired on Spike following prelims on MMAjunkie. Both fighters did damage in an action-packed first round. Shlemenko missed with an array of his spinning attempts, but punches, knees and kicks landed flush for the Russian, who scored a mid-round knockdown. Grove, meanwhile, was at his best while using his height and reach to land knees and punches against the cage, which staggered his opponent at one point late in the round. Jed Meshew: Firstly, I wrote this long thing on Bloody Elbow about how Bisping never got a title shot and then he snuck in and won the damn thing. You should go check it out. Secondly, in that thing I say that Bisping is the best fighter he’s ever been technically but that he’s way past his physical prime now, which is very, very true. Bisping has one functional eye and a badly deteriorating chin. He’s been dropped by almost everyone he’s fought in the last 2 years. But he makes up for this by being much better defensively and, fortunately for him, the bad eye is his right eye and he usually gets dropped by left hooks, which is conveniently not the punch Hendo is known for. Still, it’s the year of our lord 2016 and Michael Bisping and Miesha Tate have won legitimate world titles. Dan Henderson deserves his own. Honestly, the first guy who lands clean here is going to take it. If Hendo pulls this off, it’s the single greatest story in MMA history and I’ll be damned if I’m gonna root against the Disney movie ending. Hendo. H-bomb. Rd 1. Mookie Alexander: This is a really tight call. Pickett is well past his best but is still ridiculously tough to put away, and is willing to trade strike-for-strike almost to a fault. It’s a strategy that could work if he effectively pressures the Brazilian. Alcantara has underwhelming takedown defense and won’t kill you with high volume with his striking, particularly his boxing, but he’s also got a big frame for 135 that may pose problems for Pickett. I think we’ll see a fun fight with exciting scrambles on the mat, and in a real coinflip fight, Alcantara will do just enough to edge out the Brit on his home turf. Victor: It’s hard for me to pick against a K-Dojo fighter, because usually they use their grappling effectively and rarely do they have anyone that’s a slouch in the striking department. Edwards can be very dangerous standing and dismantles guys with a steady pace and a nice range game, but seeing how Kamaru Usman used his top control to grind out a win, it’s not hard to see how Tumenov can do something similar once Edwards begins to tire out from defending takedowns and they inevitably end up on the ground. Mookie Alexander: We just had a massive upset with Moreno beating Smolka last week, but this … this would be something. Doane looked better than ever but still lost to Pedro Munhoz. Now he’s going up in weight, having lost 3 in a row, fighting arguably the best prospect at 145 lbs, on extremely short notice. Phil Mackenzie: Omielanczuk is deeply average, in a surprisingly unheavyweight way. He can take a shot, wrestle, strike a bit, grapple a bit, keep a pace... but he has almost nothing dynamic to his game. That doesn’t seem to bode well here. If someone has even a smidge of dynamism, they’re a threat to Stefan Struve, who is offensively fantastic and defensively utterly woeful. Without the wrestling to keep Struve down or the power (?) necessary to finish him, Struve’s surprisingly good power, pace and offensive grappling will all get their chance to get play. Mookie Alexander: Right, time for the tiebreaker hedge. I picked Manuwa as a value pick on DraftKings, OSP on Three Amigos Podcast, so I should be picking a draw here just to screw with people. Manuwa is a live dog in this fight. OSP is extremely tough, but Manuwa’s kicks could pose some problems for OSP, and he’s the more technically sound striker. The problem? OSP is strong, he’s the better athlete, and he’s demonstrated heavy hands and a decent set of skills on the ground. Picking Manuwa for the upset on the basis that he wins with weird injury TKOs and OSP nearly got injury TKO’d vs. Feijao is perfectly justifiable, buuuuuuut I can’t commit to it. Mookie Alexander: Lineker’s latest weight miss aside, the signs point to Dodson winning this fight. He’s the faster fighter, more well-rounded fighter, has big power punching abilities of his own, and better footwork. I’m also an unabashed John Lineker fan, and having just seen Latifi crash a few weeks ago, I’m not prepared to see another legend fall. Lineker has vastly improved his takedown defense, incorporated powerful leg kicks, and as crazy as it sounds, he may have the cardio advantage. Dodson often goes extended periods of time without doing anything on offense, and it nearly cost him the Makovsky fight. I can see Lineker walking Dodson down, goading him into big exchanges, and the incredibly difficult to finish “Magician” will be stopped with a body-head combination. Victor: God, this is such a meat-and-potatoes card. This is a great fight that could move the winner up a few decent spots in the lightweight division, and you should definitely be pumped for it. Brazilian Cowboy not only hits hard, but works best when he finds a groove in which he establishes his range well with his jab and then follows up with accuracy. On the other hand, Brooks has the kind of speed, strength and athleticism that can and will ruin his chances of any real success. Brooks also has suffocating top control with smart shot selection from the top position, and constantly breaking down his opponent with strikes to hunt for submissions when the time is right or until the ref stops him. Phil Mackenzie: Worth noting that it’s Nova Uniao Manaus rather than the Rio branch where Pederneiras coaches / used to coach. Anyway, both fighters are extremely raw, so I’ll mostly just take Faszholz for a “big fight” experience advantage, for her loss where she acquitted herself pretty well against Lauren Murphy. Phil Mackenzie: If Aldo does leave the UFC, or attempt to, and we never get Aldo-Holloway, at least we’ll get the knock-off version here. That seems a little harsh, though. I feel like both fighters still have more to offer than they’ve shown, they just need to tune their approaches a little more. For Dias, this has been difficult due to how inactive he is, in both senses of the word. In general he’s beaten a higher quality of opponent, and was probably on his way to beating Cub Swanson until Cub landed a random hail mary headkick. It did speak to Dias’ tendency to leave opponents hanging around, though, which means that he’s only really a lock against grinders. Fili conversely appears to have zero defense, but is so aggressive that he could really just get multiple chances to roll the dice here. Another tricky one. Hacran Diaz by unanimous decision. Victor: Full disclosure - McCrory trains with an affiliate of the school I train at, and I usually recuse myself when stuff like this happens. Still, my biases won’t be a factor, because we’ve seen that Nate can still crack people but can’t take shots the way he used to. McCrory’s boxing is smooth with his timing and use of range and his BJJ is very slick for MMA. Nate has a wrestling advantage, but he’s going to have to work triple time to keep Tamdan down and avoid getting caught in a triangle. Tamdan McCrory by submission. Victor: See, I initially thought it was a horrible match to make considering the fact that I thought Burkman was fighting John Otto, the drummer for Limp Bizkit. Then I got serious, saw who Zak was and found that he not only lost his pro debut to Mike Rhodes in 2012 by unanimous decision, he got choked to sleep by Jacob Volkmann last year. The only notable veteran he’s fought is regional journeyman Jay Ellis. Ever heard that name? Because he’s mostly famous for being 13-60. His BJJ is heavily reliant on wrestling takedowns and top control, then working to take the back. His standup is basic and very limited though. He’s good, but he has nothing Burkman hasn’t seen before and can’t counter. Now I think it’s a horrible match because… well, there’s a huge gap in talent and experience. Josh Burkman by TKO.
